We went for a consult today for Rylee regarding a new process our allergist if doing called Food Desensitization Protocol. Here is a bit of info from their website:
We are excited to offer a new treatment option for food allergy patients. In a series of scheduled visits to our office, small incremental amounts of the qualifying food are given to the patient by mouth in a controlled setting. This therapy does not involve shots or medications.
After approximately twelve weeks of treatment, most patients are able to eat usual and customary amounts of the food without incident or reaction. Others may only be able to eat a limited amount of the food in question without incident or reaction. For some individuals, this therapy may permanently cure them of their food allergy. A small number of patients may not tolerate the therapy successfully.
This treatment is available to any patient two years or older with a food allergy to peanut, milk, egg, soy, wheat, or rice. For patients with multiple food allergies, only one food at a time will be administered. Currently, we are not treating tree nut allergies with this therapy.
There are some risks associated with this therapy. Our protocol is similar to those used in numerous successful studies in the United States and published in respected and recognized medical journals.
We are very excited to offer this treatment option to our food-allergic patients. We believe this therapy provides promise to patients living with food allergy.
I had told Rylee that we were just going to talk to the doctor. We did that and decided to go ahead and move forward with the process. We had to have a new skin and blood test in order to have current results for a baseline to compare to later. She was upset, but was a trooper for the skin test.
Daddy got to hold her this time. Mommy has always done it in the past.
The top left is the peanut and the ones around that are the different tree nuts. The positive and negative on the right are the "control" tests. We are very happy to report that she did not react to any of the tree nuts! She had previously tested positive to those. We are still avoiding all nuts at this point to be safe due to cross-contamination.
I read to Reagan to keep her entertained during all this.
Rylee was happy the test was over. The bloodwork will be tomorrow.
Please pray for us as we begin this process. It has been proven that 60-70% who do this can eat an entire peanut butter & jelly sandwich after the year-long process. We would just like to be able to tolerate it enough to sit at a table with someone eating it, go to a baseball game, fly, or eat at Texas Road House without risking her life.
